Guttering

Guttering Specialists in Fife and Edinburgh

Houses are designed to keep water moving, directing rainwater and moisture from the roof to the guttering and through the downpipes. Rain, sleet, snow, and moisture are inevitable, but as long as water does not soak into the building's fabric, it will cause no harm.

Gutter Repairs in Fife and Edinburgh

Guttering efficiently keeps water away from a building's exterior walls by channeling it for collection by downpipes. It prevents mini ‘waterfalls’ of rain from running off the roof edges during rainfall. The downpipe, connected to the running outlet section of the guttering, carries the water to the base of the property to drain away. Regular cleaning of guttering is essential to reduce the risk of blocked downpipes and drains.

Our services include gutter repairs and the installation of complete new gutter systems. We offer various materials, including PVC, traditional cast iron, galvanized steel, and lead guttering/gullies.

PVC Guttering Repair and Replacement

PVC guttering is a popular, cost-effective, and maintenance-free option. We provide a range of PVC guttering, from basic half-round gutters to deep flow gutters with greater rain capacity. For a more aesthetically pleasing option, we offer ogee guttering.

Additionally, we provide traditional cast iron guttering in various styles, such as half-round and Victorian ogee. When replacing cast iron guttering with PVC or another material, it is crucial to seek permission from your local authority planning department if you live in a conservation area or a listed building. We also offer alucast and lightweight materials if required.

Identifying Leaking and Overflowing Gutters

Signs of leaking or overflowing gutters include:

  • Wet external walls with slimy moss growth or stains

  • White tide marks caused by salts leaching from soaked walls

  • Puddles at the base of the wall

  • Damp patches, mould, musty smells, and blown plaster inside the house

The most likely cause of these issues is blocked gutters or downpipes, causing water to back up and overflow. Other causes may include poorly aligned gutters with insufficient slope, localised sagging, or insufficient downpipes, leading to rainwater overflow and wall saturation.

Leaking Downpipes

Symptoms of leaking downpipes are similar to those of leaking and overflowing gutters. Common causes include blockages, splits, cracks, dislodgement, rusted-through cast iron pipes, and impact damage to PVCu downpipes. Blocked cast iron downpipes can freeze, expand, and split, saturating the wall to which they are fixed.
