Flat Roofs
Expert Flat Roof Installation and Repair Services by LC Joinery Scotland
A flat roof is an area of your home that requires specialist attention. One mistake can lead to water ingress. The materials, the felt, the slope, the joins, seals, and the flashing – all need precise handling. We've seen many homeowners try DIY or hire unqualified handymen, only to end up paying twice: once for the incorrect work and again for professional repairs.
Felt Roof
Professional felt flat roof installation or repair involves blowtorching the top layers of felt. The hazardous nature of this task, working with naked flames on a flammable substrate, means it's best to hire experts. We offer a range of flat roofing services, from simple repairs and replacements to complete new constructions.
The Layers
Covering a flat roof involves a three-layer system:

-
Layer 1: The base membrane, typically 3b felt, is a flexible glass fibre felt bituminised for waterproofing. It is sanded on both sides to protect the bitumen from abrasion and is nailed to the roof, allowing flexibility for temperature changes and movement.
-
Layer 2: The underlay felt, a completely waterproof membrane, is torched onto the bituminous base layer, effectively welding the two layers together, ensuring waterproof seams.
-
Layer 3: The final layer, a waterproof bituminous membrane with embedded mineral chippings, makes the roof extremely weather resistant, reflecting sunlight and preventing melting on hot days.
Assessment: Repair or Replace
When assessing a flat roof repair, we determine whether a repair is cost-effective or if a complete renewal is advisable to prevent long-term damage to the underlying woodwork.
