Your car port can be attached to the side or back of your house or built as a freestanding structure.
Planning Permission
The Scottish Government provides guidelines for building ancillary structures like car ports under Permitted Development. Generally, planning permission is not required if:

The car port is not located in front of the house.

It is not used as a separate dwelling.

It and any other developments do not occupy more than half the grounds behind your home.

It does not exceed 4 meters in height.

Any part within a meter of the boundary is no higher than 2.5 meters.

The eaves are no higher than 3 meters.

For conservation areas or listed buildings, the car port footprint must be less than 4 square meters.
