Car Ports

Expert Car Ports by LC Joinery Scotland

A car port is an affordable and versatile alternative to a garage, providing protection for your vehicle while taking up less space. Whether your garage is already used for storage or you’ve converted it to living space, a car port offers a quick and efficient solution to shield your car from the elements.

Benefits of a Car Port

A car port offers numerous advantages, including:

  • Quick Construction: Car ports are generally constructed faster than garages, causing less disruption.

  • Protection: Shields your car from rain, frost, hail, snow, and sun, preserving your vehicle's paintwork and reducing the need to scrape your windscreen during cold mornings.

  • Versatility: Can double as a sturdy gazebo for family barbecues or as a sheltered area for hanging out washing.

Custom Design and Materials

We work with you to design a car port that complements your home. Choose from materials like timber, brickwork, steel, or alloy for the supporting structure, and select a suitable roof style—whether a simple canopy, flat roof, or lean-to with tiles or slates. Your car port can be attached to the side or back of your house or built as a freestanding structure.

Planning Permission

The Scottish Government provides guidelines for building ancillary structures like car ports under Permitted Development. Generally, planning permission is not required if:

  • The car port is not located in front of the house.

  • It is not used as a separate dwelling.

  • It and any other developments do not occupy more than half the grounds behind your home.

  • It does not exceed 4 meters in height.

  • Any part within a meter of the boundary is no higher than 2.5 meters.

  • The eaves are no higher than 3 meters.

  • For conservation areas or listed buildings, the car port footprint must be less than 4 square meters.

Always check with your council’s planning department to confirm if planning permission is required.
